Katie & Pip - #VAULTFestival2019

23/01/2019 - 27/01/2019

Network Theatre,
246a Lower Road

Running Time : 1 hour

Show Details

Katie & Pip celebrates the relationship between Katie, a Type 1 Diabetic teenager and Pip, her pet border collie trained by Katie to save her life on a daily basis.

On a journey of extreme highs and lows, performance-duo Charlotte and Rob alongside Katie (Rob’s younger sister) and Pip, embrace the unpredictability of flailing blood sugar levels and dangerous symptoms with the aim of staying alive; staying in the smiley zone. Making this invisible disability, visible.

A true story which began in Scotland; this performance celebrates freedom and living life to the full, with help from a live dog. Watch humans be dogs, and dogs be humans as this chaotic and unpredictable collision of youth unfolds.

About the company

Tin Can People is an artistic collective led by Charlotte Berry & Rob Gregson who live and work in Preston. As exciting young theatre makers, practitioners and creative producers; Tin Can People are passionate about making work that is collaborative and explores the notion of liveness.

‘Tin Can People are dry in their demeanour, they take having fun and dancing very seriously.’

Tin Can People are both associate artists and creative producers with DERELICT; a programme of contemporary performance and live art based at The University of Central Lancashire in Preston. Whilst programming internationally and nationally established artists, they creatively produce and devise participatory community projects.

What the press say

‘It’s a careful, unsentimental and quietly moving celebration of contingency, of impermanence.’ - The Stage

‘This honest narrative juxtaposes the reality of her condition with the abstract nature of the performance piece.’ - Fest

‘Spoken words echo and cascade through various realities and scenarios common to diabetes, immersing the audience in Katie’s emotional landscape.’ - Edinburgh Festivals Magazine

’As heart-warming as it is unsettling. It tends to itself in a controlled and affectionate way... jagged around the edges a lot of the time, balancing between fun and fear; a bit like life for Katie and Pip.’ Exeunt Magazine

‘Tin Can People recreate hypoglycaemic episodes... giving audiences a tremendous insight into what it is like to live with Type 1 Diabetes... ’ The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology

‘The show is a non-narrative explosion of human and dog interaction.’ Laura Kressly (independent blog)

‘Katie & Pip is a charming, warm and heartfelt celebration of the love, trust and often unspoken shared experience between one dog and the human she endeavours to care for.’ FLARE Festival
